Medication available Counseling-based care
Treatment With or Without Medication
Spero Health treats substance use disorders with or without medication. If you are diagnosed with a substance use disorder, treatment built on counseling and recovery support, without medication, is available at every Spero Health clinic.
Many people know Spero Health for Suboxone treatment, and medication-assisted treatment remains central to how we treat opioid addiction. But medication is one tool among several. For many substances, including methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana, counseling is the treatment that works, and it is part of every patient’s substance use disorder treatment plan.

Opioid Addiction and Medication-Assisted Treatment
Opioid use disorder is Spero Health’s core specialty. We treat addiction to fentanyl, heroin and prescription opioids such as oxycodone and hydrocodone with medication-assisted treatment (MAT): FDA-approved medication combined with counseling and medical oversight. Federal health agencies recognize MAT as the standard of care for opioid use disorder.
Our providers prescribe Suboxone, Sublocade, Brixadi and Vivitrol, based on a thorough evaluation of what is safest and most effective for you. Read our Suboxone and MAT FAQs or learn how outpatient addiction treatment works.
Kratom and 7-OH
Spero Health treats kratom and 7-OH dependence with the same medications we use for opioid use disorder, together with counseling.
Kratom and concentrated 7-OH products are sold legally in many places, but their active compounds act on the same opioid receptors in the brain. That is why regular use can lead to dependence and why stopping can bring on opioid-like withdrawal. Our providers evaluate each patient and recommend the safest option. Xylazine (“tranq”)
Xylazine is an animal sedative that is increasingly mixed into fentanyl and other street drugs, often without the person knowing. It is not an opioid, but most people exposed to it are also using opioids. Spero Health treats the opioid use disorder with medication and counseling and helps connect patients to care for xylazine-related wounds. Source: National Institute on Drug Abuse
Alcohol Addiction Treatment
Spero Health provides outpatient treatment for alcohol use disorder at every clinic, so you can get help without stepping away from work or family.
Alcohol treatment at Spero Health includes:
- A medical evaluation to find the safest starting point, because alcohol withdrawal can be medically serious
- Individual counseling and group therapy
- FDA-approved medication such as Vivitrol (naltrexone) when clinically appropriate
- Recovery support and care coordination
- Telehealth visits for eligible patients

Other Substances We Treat
Methamphetamine, cocaine and prescription stimulants
There is currently no FDA-approved medication for methamphetamine or cocaine addiction, so treatment is built on counseling and behavioral therapy.
Spero Health treats stimulant use disorders, including methamphetamine, cocaine, crack and misuse of prescription stimulants such as Adderall, with individual counseling, group therapy, recovery support and coordinated medical care. Source: National Institute on Drug Abuse
Benzodiazepines (Xanax, Klonopin, Valium)
Treatment for benzodiazepine dependence starts with a medical evaluation. Stopping these medications suddenly can be dangerous, so your provider may recommend medically supervised withdrawal first. Outpatient counseling and recovery support with Spero Health follow.
Marijuana and synthetic cannabinoids
Cannabis use disorder is real and treatable. Spero Health treats problem use of marijuana, THC vapes and edibles, and synthetic products such as K2 or Spice through counseling and recovery support.
Ketamine and club drugs
Spero Health treats misuse of ketamine, MDMA and hallucinogens through counseling and recovery support. Spero Health does not provide ketamine therapy or ketamine infusions.
Prescription drugs, inhalants and multiple substances
Most people who come to us use more than one substance. Your provider evaluates everything you are using, including prescription drugs, inhalants and nicotine, and builds one plan around you, starting with whatever poses the greatest risk to your health. Smoking cessation support is available.
Counseling as Part of Your Treatment
Counseling at Spero Health is part of substance use disorder treatment. It is available to every patient diagnosed with a substance use disorder, whether or not they take medication. Our integrated care model brings medical and behavioral healthcare together, so your provider, counselor and care coordinator work as one team.
- Individual counseling. One-on-one sessions to understand what drives your use and build skills to manage it.
- Group therapy. Structured sessions with others in recovery.
- Recovery support services. Help with employment, housing, healthcare and other practical barriers.
- Intensive outpatient program (IOP). More structure and clinical contact, available at many locations.
- Whole-person medical support. Hepatitis C testing and treatment and smoking cessation as part of your care plan.
Co-Occurring Disorders: Anxiety, Depression and Trauma
For patients in treatment for a substance use disorder, Spero Health also treats co-occurring disorders, including anxiety, depression and trauma.
A co-occurring disorder is a mental health condition that occurs alongside a substance use disorder. Many people use drugs or alcohol to cope with anxiety, depression or the effects of trauma, and substance use can make each of them worse. Treating the co-occurring disorder together with the substance use disorder gives people a better chance at lasting recovery.
At Spero Health, care for co-occurring disorders is part of your substance use disorder treatment plan, delivered by the same team at the same clinic or by telehealth. Spero Health does not offer standalone mental health treatment.
Cost, Medicaid, Medicare and Insurance
Spero Health accepts state Medicaid plans, Medicare and most commercial insurance. Coverage applies to substance use disorder treatment with or without medication, so you do not need to be prescribed a medication for your care to be covered.
Coverage details vary by state and by plan. Our Connection Care Team verifies your benefits and explains any out-of-pocket costs before your first appointment, so there are no surprises. Call 866-755-4258 and we will check your coverage for you.
Veterans: VA Community Care Network (CCN)
Spero Health is an approved in-network provider under the VA Community Care Network, covering outpatient substance use disorder treatment across our footprint, including telehealth. The VA must approve community care before routine treatment begins, and our intake team helps veterans through the authorization process.

Drug and Alcohol Assessments, Including Court-Ordered
Spero Health offers standalone drug and alcohol assessments, including court-ordered assessments. You do not need to be a Spero Health patient to schedule one.

If treatment is recommended and you choose Spero Health, your care can begin with the same team. Call 866-755-4258 to ask about scheduling an assessment.

Yes. If you are diagnosed with a substance use disorder, you can receive treatment without medication at every Spero Health clinic.

If medication is not right for your situation, or you prefer not to take it, your treatment plan can be built on individual counseling, group therapy and recovery support. If a medication could help, your provider will explain the option and the choice is yours.

Does Spero Health treat alcohol addiction?
Yes. Spero Health provides outpatient treatment for alcohol use disorder.
Care includes a medical evaluation, counseling, recovery support and, when clinically appropriate, FDA-approved medication such as Vivitrol. Because alcohol withdrawal can be medically serious, treatment begins with an evaluation to find the safest starting point.
Is Suboxone used to treat alcohol addiction?
No. Suboxone, Sublocade and Brixadi are medications for opioid use disorder, not alcohol.
For alcohol use disorder, Spero Health providers may prescribe Vivitrol (naltrexone) when it is clinically appropriate, alongside counseling. Your provider will explain which options fit your situation.
Do you treat kratom or 7-OH addiction?
Yes. Spero Health treats kratom and 7-OH dependence with the same medications we use for opioid use disorder, together with counseling.
The active compounds in kratom act on the same opioid receptors in the brain, which is why stopping can cause opioid-like withdrawal. A licensed provider evaluates each patient and recommends the safest option.
Is there medication for meth or cocaine addiction?
There is currently no FDA-approved medication for methamphetamine or cocaine addiction, so treatment is built on counseling.
Counseling and behavioral therapy are the most effective treatments available for stimulant use disorder. At Spero Health that means individual counseling, group therapy, recovery support and coordinated medical care.
Do you treat Xanax or other benzodiazepine addiction?
Yes. Treatment for benzodiazepine dependence starts with a medical evaluation.
Stopping benzodiazepines suddenly can be dangerous. Depending on your health and how much you are taking, your provider may recommend medically supervised withdrawal first, then outpatient counseling and recovery support with Spero Health.

Do you offer court-ordered drug and alcohol assessments?
Yes. Spero Health offers standalone drug and alcohol assessments, including court-ordered assessments.
You do not need to be a Spero Health patient to schedule one. A licensed clinician evaluates your substance use and recommends next steps. Call 866-755-4258 to ask about scheduling.
What if I use more than one substance?
That is common, and your treatment plan will address all of it.
Many people who come to Spero Health use more than one substance. Your provider evaluates everything you are using and builds one plan, starting with whatever poses the greatest risk to your health.
Do I need detox before starting treatment?
Not always.
Whether a separate withdrawal management program is needed first depends on your substances, health history and a medical evaluation. Many patients begin outpatient treatment without an inpatient stay. For some situations, especially alcohol or sedative dependence, your provider may recommend medically supervised withdrawal first for safety.
Does Spero Health offer methadone, inpatient rehab or sober living?
No. Spero Health is an outpatient provider.
We do not dispense methadone, and we do not operate inpatient rehab, residential detox or sober living homes. We do offer outpatient treatment, intensive outpatient programs (IOP) at many locations, telehealth, and medication-assisted treatment with Suboxone, Sublocade, Brixadi and Vivitrol. If you need a higher level of care first, our team can help coordinate it.
